The Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council has announced plans to begin a two day clean up and enforcement operation along the Lagos Port Corridor from May 14 to May 15, 2026. The exercise is aimed at tackling persistent traffic congestion, extortion, and operational challenges affecting activities around the nation’s busiest port routes.
The decision follows growing concerns over the return of the notorious Apapa gridlock, which has continued to disrupt cargo movement and business operations within the Lagos port corridor. Maritime stakeholders have also raised complaints over inefficiencies linked to the Eto call up system and illegal activities along the access roads.
According to a notice issued to members of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners and signed by the Secretary General, Mohammed Sani Bala, the operation will focus on clearing traffic bottlenecks, removing abandoned trucks, and eliminating illegal checkpoints and extortion points along the corridor.
The statement explained that unregulated traffic practices and activities of illegal operators have increased logistics costs and slowed cargo evacuation from the ports. Truck owners were directed to immediately remove broken down vehicles obstructing the roads leading to the ports and comply strictly with the approved single lane arrangement for trucks operating in the area.
Drivers were also warned against indiscriminate parking while members of the association were advised to maintain orderly conduct throughout the enforcement period. The association further urged truck owners and drivers to cooperate fully with security agencies and traffic management officials to avoid penalties or sanctions.
The operation is expected to involve multiple enforcement agencies working alongside PEBEC to restore order, improve traffic flow, and create a more efficient business environment around the Lagos ports corridor.
Stakeholders believe the clean up exercise could help reduce delays in cargo movement and improve overall efficiency within Nigeria’s maritime sector if properly enforced.
