Super Falcons striker, Asisat Oshoala, has raised concerns over the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) repeated concentration of major tournaments in Morocco, urging for a more inclusive approach that gives other African nations a chance to host continental competitions.
Speaking on X, Oshoala, who plays for Al Hilal in the Saudi Women’s Premier League, highlighted what she sees as an imbalance in African football’s spotlight. “The big question here is when will this whole CAF compensation to Morocco end? Awards, tournaments and all… it’s getting boring now. We need other countries to step up,” she stated. She added, “Everything concerning African football happens in Morocco; it feels like that’s the new HQ.”
The six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year suggested Nigeria could successfully host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) through regional collaboration with neighbouring countries. “We can co-host with our neighbours if we are serious. Cameroon, Ghana, Benin, Togo are all next door… you can’t tell me two of these five neighbouring countries can’t co-host AFCON,” Oshoala said, emphasizing the practicality of joint hosting.
Oshoala’s remarks come in the wake of Morocco’s qualification for the 2025 AFCON final after defeating Nigeria 4–2 on penalties in a tense semi-final. Morocco’s hosting of the 35th edition of the tournament underscores CAF’s confidence in the country’s infrastructure, organisational capacity, and football culture.
While Morocco’s growing influence in African football is undeniable, Oshoala’s comments have reignited debates about regional balance, fairness, and inclusivity in the selection of host nations. Her call for Nigeria and its neighbours to step up reflects a broader desire among African football stakeholders for wider participation in the continent’s premier football events.
