During the Senate’s review of Christopher Musa’s nomination for Minister of Defence, Senator Adams Oshiomhole made it clear that Nigerians are tired of hearing about what might be possible. He said people no longer want to hear about potential or what could happen. Instead, they want strong and clear promises that the country’s security problems will be solved.
Oshiomhole told Musa that leaders must speak with full confidence. He said using words like “can” sounds weak and unsure. According to him, Nigeria has used that kind of language for too long. What people want now, he said, is to hear leaders say with certainty that the armed forces will win the fight against insecurity under Musa’s leadership and President Bola Tinubu’s government.
He also talked about how fear and confusion spread when kidnappings happen. He pointed out that different reactions from state and local leaders often make things worse. In some cases, he said, armed groups have even come out to talk directly with local officials. Oshiomhole questioned how these groups can be found for talks but not for arrest.
He warned that when the military looks unsure or weak, it hurts the government’s power. He said the government must always be in full control of force to keep the country safe. If not, criminals will feel bold enough to challenge the government.
In his words, “What we expect from you is assurance, we will win this war, we shall win this war, not can, can is about potential, we have talked too much about potential.”
