The organisers of the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race have announced a one week adjustment to the date of the 2026 edition, moving the competition from May 23 to May 30, 2026.
According to Pamodzi Sports Marketing, the ce is aimed at improving logistics and ensuring a more successful and professionally coordinated event. The race is recognised by World Athletics as a Gold Label road race, one of the highest classifications in international road racing.
Race Director Zack Amodu explained that the postponement is a proactive measure designed to enhance athlete and spectator experience. He noted that the additional week will allow organisers to finalise expanded medical coverage, strengthen security arrangements, and improve spectator facilities.
Amodu also confirmed that the race’s medical director has recently completed certification with World Athletics in Madrid, making the event the first in Nigeria to have a World Athletics certified medical director. This development further reinforces the race’s growing international standards.
He emphasized that the adjustment is not due to any operational setback but rather part of efforts to elevate the quality and prestige of the competition.
The Okpekpe race has continued to grow in reputation as one of Africa’s leading road running events. It was the first road race in Nigeria and West Africa to receive a label status from World Athletics and the first in the region to have its course officially measured by a certified course measurer.
Organisers say the 2026 edition will continue that tradition of excellence, attracting elite athletes from across the world while showcasing Nigeria’s capacity to host world class sporting events.
