Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised Nigerians to adopt healthy lifestyles through regular exercise, proper t, adequate rest, and routine medical checkups, revealing that these habits have helped him remain active at 89 despite living with diabetes for more than 40 years.

Obasanjo spoke in Abeokuta during the 2026 FirstBank OBJ Golf Tournament held at the Abeokuta Golf Club, where he performed the ceremonial tee off.

The former president described exercise as essential at every stage of life, especially for senior citizens. According to him, maintaining discipline in health management has been key to his strength and fitness over the years.

Obasanjo explained his personal healthy living formula known as “DREAMS plus C.” He said D stands for t, R for rest, E for exercise, M for medical checkups and medication, S for social interaction, and C for contentment.

He stressed the importance of balancing ambition with contentment and encouraged Nigerians to prioritise both physical and mental wellbeing.

The elder statesman also praised the organisers and sponsors of the annual golf tournament for promoting unity, friendship, and national cohesion through sports.

Speaking at the event, Olusegun Alebiosu described the tournament as a platform that encourages discipline, integrity, and excellence. He commended participants and organisers for maintaining high standards in Nigerian golf.

Vice Chairman of the Abeokuta Golf Club, Oladele Adeniran, said the competition was organised to honour Obasanjo’s contributions to Nigeria and Africa. He also dismissed claims that golf is only for the wealthy, noting that many successful golfers started as cads from humble backgrounds.

The tournament featured leading Nigerian golfers, including Francis Ekpeyong, who emerged winner of the professional category.
