In a recent development at the Abeokuta Magistrate’s Court, the case against popular Nigerian musician Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, has been adjourned to March 26, 2025. The adjournment aims to allow the prosecution to merge the charges against the artist with those of his workers, streamlining the judicial process. The decision came during a court session on Wednesday, following Portable’s initial arraignment on February 20, 2025.

Senior State Counsel, Mr. Timileyin Oredein, argued before the court that proceeding with Portable’s case separately from that of his nine workers would be an inefficient use of judicial resources. Oredein emphasized that the charges against the musician and his employees are closely related, describing them as “sister cases” that warrant a unified trial. He urged the court to consolidate the charges to avoid redundancy and expedite the legal proceedings.

Portable and his workers were first brought before the court on February 6, 2025, facing a five-count charge. The allegations include conspiracy, assault, unlawful obstruction while armed with cutlasses and a gun, and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace. Additionally, the defendants are accused of assaulting three officials from the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development during an altercation that has drawn significant public attention.

Oredein’s request for a short adjournment was granted, with the court agreeing to reconvene on March 26 to address the merged charges. This development underscores the prosecution’s intent to present a cohesive case against Portable and his team, potentially intensifying the legal scrutiny on the controversial artist.

Portable, known for his energetic performances and outspoken persona, has found himself at the center of legal troubles that could impact his career and public image. The allegations of violence and obstruction paint a stark contrast to his musical success, leaving fans and observers awaiting the outcome of the trial. As the court prepares to revisit the case later this month, all eyes will be on how Portable and his legal team respond to the consolidated charges.

The adjournment reflects the judiciary’s effort to ensure a fair and efficient process, balancing the complexity of multiple defendants with the need for timely justice. Until March 26, the case remains a developing story, with its resolution poised to set a precedent for handling similar high-profile incidents in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
