The United States has taken a significant step toward bolstering South Korea’s air defense arsenal by approving a potential sale of cutting edge AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles valued at $125 million. The State Department announced the authorization on Friday, emphasizing that the transaction would enhance the Asian ally’s ability to counter evolving aerial threats in the Indo-Pacific region. This Foreign Military Sale now moves to Congress for notification and review before final approval.
Under the proposed agreement, South Korea has requested 103 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II tactical missiles along with 10 guidance units and associated equipment including training aids, spare parts, and other non-major defense items. The advanced missiles represent a substantial upgrade to South Korea’s air combat capabilities, particularly for its fleet of F-15K fighter jets which have already conducted test firing exercises over Yellow Sea ranges earlier this year.
The State Department underscored that this sale directly supports American foreign policy objectives by strengthening a crucial ally that serves as a pillar of political ility and economic progress throughout the Indo-Pacific. Officials noted the deal would improve interoperability between South Korean and US forces while providing deterrence against regional aggression. RTX Corporation of Arlington, Virginia, has been designated as the principal contractor for the transaction.
