Former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon has declared that Nigeria will survive its growing political, economic and security challenges as prominent leaders gathered in Abuja for the public presentation of his autobiography titled My Life of Duty and Allegiance.
The event brought together political leaders, traditional rulers, military figures and elder statesmen who used the occasion to reflect on Nigeria’s future ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speakers repeatedly warned against division, political desperation and growing distrust among citizens.
Gowon expressed confidence in Nigeria’s unity despite current challenges. Reflecting on his time as military ruler during the civil war, he said the country survived difficult moments before and would endure again.
He warned politicians against engaging in desperate and dangerous politics during election periods. According to him, free, fair and transparent elections remain essential for preserving national ility and democracy in Nigeria.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan praised Gowon’s leadership during the civil war years, saying true leadership is tested during periods of crisis. Jonathan described Gowon’s “No Victor, No Vanquished” philosophy as a major step that helped heal divisions after the war and prevented deeper national bitterness.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, also urged Nigerians to reject politics built on division and suion. He stressed that peace and development must go together and encouraged citizens to learn from the country’s history.
Bishop Matthew Kukah reminded Nigerians that history depends on perspective and encouraged people to document their own experiences. Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II praised Gowon’s character and humanity, saying leaders are remembered more for integrity than power or achievements.
Retired General Theophilus Danjuma donated N3 billion during the launch while businessman Aliko Dangote contributed N500 million towards the event.
As discussions ended, many speakers shared concerns about Nigeria’s current tensions but maintained hope that unity, dialogue and responsible leadership would help the nation overcome its challenges once again.
