African Athletics Championships came to a close with Nigeria securing a total of 12 medals after a dominant performance in the women’s 4x400m relay on the final day of competition.
The Nigerian quartet of Esther Okon, Toheebat Jimoh, Jecinter Lawrence, and Patience Okon George delivered a commanding run of 3:29.25 to win gold, finishing well ahead of Ethiopia and Kenya. The victory marked Nigeria’s fourth gold medal of the championships and reinforced the country’s strength in relay events.
With the final result, Nigeria concluded the competition with four gold, five silver, and three bronze medals, placing fourth on the overall medal table behind Kenya, South Africa, and Ethiopia.
Kenya topped the standings with 17 medals, while South Africa finished second, and Ethiopia placed third.
Nigeria’s final day performance was further boosted by sprinter Rosemary Chukwuma, who won silver in the women’s 200m with a time of 23.60 seconds. She finished behind Ivory Coast’s Maboundou Kone but ended the championships with a strong personal haul that included multiple medals.
One of Nigeria’s standout athletes was Tobi Amusan, who secured gold in the 100m hurdles, maintaining her reputation as one of the continent’s top hurdlers.
Other gold medals came from the mixed 4x400m relay team as well as the women’s 4x100m relay squad, both of which delivered impressive performances throughout the championships.
Nigeria also recorded several silver and bronze medal finishes in field and track events, including hammer throw, discus, and sprint races, highlighting a balanced but competitive showing across disciplines.
Sports analysts noted that while Nigeria did not finish among the top three nations, the team’s relay dominance and individual performances suggest strong potential heading into future international competitions.
