Nigerian athletes have opened the outdoor athletics season in spectacular fashion, delivering a series of standout performances across sprinting, jumping, and throwing events in competitions held in the United States.
One of the biggest highlights came from javelin thrower Chinecherem Nnamdi, who produced a career best throw of 84.68m at the Tom Jones Memorial in Florida. His throw not only secured victory in the men’s javelin event but also broke his own national record by nearly two metres. The performance moved him up to seventh on the African all time list, marking a significant milestone in his career.
In the sprints, NCAA indoor champion Kanyinsola Ajayi continued his impressive form by winning the men’s 100m invitational race in a wind assisted 9.90 seconds. He led a strong finish for Nigerian athletes, with Israel Okon placing second in 9.95 seconds, reinforcing Nigeria’s growing dominance in collegiate sprint events.
In the field events, high jumper Temitope Adeshina maintained her excellent form by clearing 1.95m to win the women’s high jump at the Mt SAC Relays in California. Her performance currently ranks as the best in the NCAA this season, continuing her unbeaten run in outdoor competition.
Adeshina, who holds a personal best and national record of 1.97m, remains one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers in the discipline and is targeting her first major outdoor title of the season.
In the quarter mile, World Championships finalist Ezekiel Nathaniel opened his 2026 campaign with a 45.47 second run in the 400m at the Tom Jones Memorial. The race marked his first individual appearance since finishing fourth in the 400m hurdles final at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.
In the women’s 400m, Chioma Nwachukwu also impressed with a new personal best of 51.24 seconds. Her performance places her among the top Nigerian athletes in the event this year and signals a strong start to her outdoor season.
These performances underline Nigeria’s growing presence on the global athletics stage, with athletes consistently delivering personal bests and record breaking results across multiple disciplines.
