Former Senate Leader Ali Ndume says President Bola Tinubu’s emergency security measures are starting to show clear results in the fight against terrorism and banditry. He also urged northern governors to follow the example of Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum.
Ndume, who represents Borno South, made the remarks in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja. His comments came after recent kidnappings in several states, including students at Government Girls Secondary School, Maga in Kebbi State, pupils at Papiri Catholic School in Niger State, and worshippers at a church in Kwara State.
In response to the rise in s, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency on insecurity and ordered wide actions to break up terrorist groups. One key order was for the Department of State Services to send trained forest guards to clear out terrorists and bandits hiding in forests.
“The directive to engage forest guards, coupled with their training, has gone a long way to complement the efforts of the Nigerian Army and they are happy with that too,” Ndume said. He added that the move has helped cooperation between agencies. “There is visible improvement in terms of cooperation between the Armed Forces and other security agencies. That is very commendable.”
Ndume also spoke about better equipment for troops. “There is visible improvement in the kitting of the military in terms of new arms, uniforms, protection helmets, boots, and bulletproof vests.” He welcomed the boost in welfare and said morale on the front lines has improved.
While noting that military pay had been doubled, Ndume said salaries still lag behind those of nearby countries. He urged the government to keep buying key equipment. “Government must do more by giving priority to arms and ammunition needed at the theatre of operations. They need to procure more helicopters, add more armoured personnel carriers and gun trucks,” he said.
Ndume praised Governor Zulum for his strong support to security forces, saying the governor had funded troops and local defence groups. “That has complemented the efforts of the Nigerian Army. That’s very commendable. I urge other governors in the North to emulate him,” he added.
