NCC Rolls Out Device Management System to Enforce Type Approval Standards

The Nigerian Communications Commission has launched a technology-enabled framework to tighten oversight of communications devices sold and used across the country. At the heart of this initiative sits the Device Management System, a platform designed to electronically verify Type Approval compliance for SIM-enabled devices. It’s a significant shift toward automated enforcement.

Under Section 132(2) of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, licensed service providers, equipment manufacturers and suppliers must obtain Type Approval before any communications equipment can be sold or used in Nigeria. The DMS now makes tracking that compliance far more efficient than manual ods ever could.

What does this mean for everyday consumers? Better network performance and stronger confidence in the devices they purchase. The system will also help identify non-compliant devices more quickly, potentially reducing counterfeit and substandard equipment flooding the market.

The Commission has already begun the first phase of implementation. Critical stakeholders including the Nigeria Customs Service, Original Equipment Manufacturers, importers and relevant market associations are being brought into the process. This phase focuses on onboarding devices currently held in stock and ensuring imports meet required standards.

The move reflects a broader push to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s communications ecosystem through smarter regulation rather than just more rules.
