An African Grey parrot in Belfast, Northern Ireland, has become an unexpected political commentator, regularly insulting President Donald Trump whenever he appears on television. Lucky Angel, an 11-year-old bird owned by artist Marie Macleavey, reportedly shouts profanities at the American president and occasionally yells “up the Democrats” during news broadcasts.
Where did Lucky learn such colourful language? Macleavey attributes the behaviour to her own vocal reactions while watching television news. The Belfast resident, who previously lived in New York and maintains close ties to American politics through her sister who still resides there, frequently voices her left-wing opinions during broadcasts.
Lucky’s political awareness isn’t his only notable trait. The parrot has successfully pressured Macleavey’s cousin to stop vaping by complaining persistently whenever she lit up in the home. Macleavey adopted Lucky when he was two years old after responding to a local advertisement seeking a new home for the bird.
“He’s just so entertaining,” Macleavey said, expressing delight that her feathered companion picked up her favourite phrases. The story highlights how parrots, known for their mimicry abilities, can absorb and repeat the atmosphere of their surroundings, even controversial political opinions.
