The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control NAFDAC has cleared Food and Food Integrated Company Limited, producers of BON Bread, following investigations into allegations that the bread remained fresh for more than two months without molding.

The controversy began on April 13, 2026, after a social media blogger claimed that a loaf of bread supplied to her for sale stayed unspoiled for over two months. The allegation quickly sparked public concern, with many Nigerians questioning whether harmful preservatives were being used in the bread production process.

Although the complainant did not initially mention the bread brand, the manufacturer identified BON Bread as the product in question and strongly denied any wrongdoing.

In response to the growing public debate, NAFDAC launched an immediate investigation to determine the facts surrounding the claim. According to a statement signed by the Director General of NAFDAC, Professor Christianah Adeyeye, officials from the agency’s Greater FCT Directorate inspected the company’s bakery facility in Abuja on April 20, 2026.

The agency disclosed that samples of bread and baking ingrents were collected directly from the factory, while additional bread samples were purchased from the open market for laboratory analysis.

NAFDAC stated that laboratory findings confirmed the use of calcium propionate as a preservative and noted that the quantity used was within internationally approved safety limits specified by the Codex Alimentarius food standards.

The agency further explained that all BON Bread samples tested from both the production facility and the open market were satisfactory and free from harmful substances including bromate and non nutritive sweeteners.

NAFDAC emphasized that bread manufacturers are allowed to use approved preservation ods capable of extending shelf life as long as they comply with global food safety standards.

The agency advised Nigerians to report concerns about regulated products directly through official channels rather than relying solely on social media claims.
