Former Real Madrid defender Álvaro Arbeloa has confirmed his departure from the club following a disappointing trophyless campaign, while reports suggest that José Mourinho has emerged as the leading candidate to take over the managerial role at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Arbeloa’s exit comes just months after he assumed responsibility from Xabi Alonso in January, ending a difficult spell that failed to turn around Real Madrid’s fortunes. The club ended the season without a major trophy for a second consecutive year, increasing pressure on the coaching structure and leadership.
According to reports from the BBC, Mourinho is currently the clear favourite and the only coach actively in talks with the club as president Florentino Pérez accelerates plans to appoint a new manager before pre season begins.
Speaking ahead of Real Madrid’s final match of the season, Arbeloa expressed disappointment at the outcome but thanked the club and supporters for their backing during his time in charge.
He said he gave everything to the club and confirmed that his departure would not include a move to Mourinho’s backroom staff, adding that his future would be considered later.
Real Madrid endured a turbulent campaign, losing the La Liga title to Barcelona and exiting the UEFA Champions League at the quarter final stage against Bayern Munich. The season was also marked by internal tensions and dressing room unrest involving senior players, further intensifying calls for structural ces.
Mourinho, currently managing Benfica, has reportedly maintained silence on his future until the end of the season. He previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup during his first spell at the club.
Club president Florentino Pérez is believed to view Mourinho as a strong candidate to restore discipline, authority, and a winning mentality within a squad that has struggled for consistency.
If appointed, Mourinho would return to the Bernabéu under immediate pressure to halt Real Madrid’s decline and re elish dominance in both Spanish and European football.
