Millie Bright has announced her immediate retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a remarkable career with Chelsea Women and the England national team.

The 32 year old defender leaves the game after making 294 appearances for Chelsea since joining from Doncaster Belles in 2015. She also earned 88 caps for England, contributing significantly to the national team over nearly a decade. Bright had previously stepped away from international football in 2025 before now confirming her full retirement from the sport.

In an emotional statement, she said she is ready to say goodbye to football, adding that she has given everything to the game and never envisioned playing for any other club. She described Chelsea as her lifelong football home and expressed gratitude for her journey.

Bright’s career at Chelsea was decorated with success, including eight Women’s Super League titles, six FA Cups, and four League Cups. She played a key role in the club’s dominance, particularly during their run of six consecutive league titles between 2020 and 2025.

She also became Chelsea’s record appearance holder with 314 matches and scored 19 goals, elishing herself as one of the club’s greatest ever players. Over her time in west London, she lifted a total of 20 trophies and became the club’s longest serving player.

On the international stage, Bright was a crucial figure in England’s historic Euro 2022 triumph, starting every match as the Lionesses secured their first major trophy.

Chelsea confirmed that she will remain part of the club in a new capacity as an ambassador and trustee of the foundation, ensuring her influence continues beyond her playing days.

Her retirement marks the end of an era for both club and country, closing the chapter on one of the most decorated careers in English women’s football.
