Mexican Teachers Threaten World Cup Protests Over Salary Dispute

Teachers in Mexico have warned of possible mass protests during the upcoming FIFA World Cup if their demands for higher wages are not met, raising concerns about potential disruptions during one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

Members of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE), a dissident wing of the country’s teachers’ union, staged a demonstration in Mexico City on Friday to demand significant salary increases. The protest coincided with Teachers’ Day and drew thousands of participants who marched toward the education ministry but were blocked by security forces.

The group is demanding a substantial pay rise beyond the nine percent increase agreed between the government and the official union leadership. Some factions are calling for increases as high as 100 percent, arguing that current salaries are insufficient given rising living costs.

Teachers currently earn a starting monthly salary of about US$967 in Mexico’s public education system, a figure protesters say is inadequate for basic living expenses.

During the protest, members of the CNTE criticized government priorities, claiming that resources are being directed toward the upcoming FIFA World Cup instead of addressing education needs. The tournament is set to begin on June 11 and will be jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

One protester, Filiberto Fraustro Orozco, warned that teachers could escalate industrial action if their demands are ignored, including large scale disruptions during the World Cup period.

Previous strikes by teachers in Mexico have caused major disruptions in Mexico City, including road blockages and temporary closures affecting access to key infrastructure such as the international airport.

Authorities are reportedly monitoring the situation closely as the country prepares to welcome millions of visitors for the global football tournament.
