Mercy Johnson Faces Backlash Over N25,000 Menstrual Care Brand

Mercy Johnson Okojie has come under heavy criticism on social media after being unveiled as a brand ambassador for Girls Tag, a menstrual care product reportedly priced at N25,000.

The product, described as an all in one period care pack designed for girls aged nine and above, was recently launched with Mercy Johnson and her daughter, Purity Okojie, serving as ambassadors for the brand.

Shortly after the unveiling, Regina Daniels was also announced as an ambassador, further drawing public attention to the product and its pricing.

However, the launch quickly sparked widespread backlash online, with many Nigerians describing the cost as unrealistic and insensitive given the country’s economic realities.

Critics argued that millions of women and girls across Nigeria already struggle to afford basic sanitary products, with some reportedly resorting to unsafe alternatives or missing school during menstruation due to lack of access to affordable menstrual care.

Several social media users questioned the justification for the high price, especially for a product considered a basic necessity.

One user stated that sanitary pads should not be treated as luxury items, while another argued that menstrual care products ought to be affordable and accessible to all girls regardless of social class.

Others defended the celebrities and the brand, insisting that businesses have the right to target specific market segments and that not every product is designed for the average consumer.

The controversy has since generated heated conversations online about period poverty, celebrity endorsements, women’s health, and the affordability of sanitary products in Nigeria.

Neither Mercy Johnson nor Girls Tag had officially responded to the criticism at the time of this report.
