The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) has commissioned an integrated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refuelling facility at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, as part of its efforts to catalyse investments in Nigeria’s gas value chain and deepen domestic gas utilisation.

Speaking at the event, MDGIF Executive Director, Mr. Oluwole Adama, described the project as a tangible demonstration of Nigeria’s gas-based energy transition. “This project represents more than the commissioning of a refuelling station. It symbolises progress, partnership, and purpose in advancing Nigeria’s energy transition, promoting cleaner fuels and deepening domestic gas utilisation in line with national energy objectives,” he said.

MDGIF, through equity partnerships with private investors such as FEMADEC Energy Limited, is implementing 20 CNG refuelling infrastructure projects across 20 federal universities in Nigeria. The initiative is aimed at unlocking gas value chains, improving gas access, enhancing environmental sustainability, and delivering socio-economic benefits.

Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof Adebayo Simeon Bamire, praised the project for serving both the university and the surrounding community, fostering research opportunities, practical learning, and innovation in alternative fuels. The initiative will also strengthen university-community relations, promote sustainable transport, and create shared economic value.

FEMADEC Group CEO, Engr Akinnola Fola, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to safe, efficient, and scalable CNG infrastructure nationwide through public-private collaboration.

The facility is designed to reduce transport costs and pollution on campus, providing CNG buses and vehicle conversion services for students, staff, and neighbouring communities. In support of clean transport, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu donated 50 CNG-powered buses, while PiCNG provided 10 CNG-powered tricycles to further promote affordable and environmentally friendly mobility.
