Malawi has confirmed a second polio outbreak after health authorities detected the virus in environmental sewage samples, officials announced on February 2. The discovery prompted emergency vaccination campaigns aimed at preventing further spread, particularly among children.
The Ministry of Health said surveillance systems allowed for early detection before widespread transmission occurred. International health partners are supporting Malawi with vaccines logistics and technical expertise.
Officials stressed that maintaining high immunization coverage remains critical as polio continues to pose risks in parts of Africa despite global eradication efforts.
