Made Kuti, son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, has shared his perspective on marriage proposals, stating that he chose not to kneel when proposing to his wife because he believes marriage should be a mutual decision rather than a one sided act.

The Grammy nominated artist made the statement during an episode of the Timeless Podcast aired on the Nix Network YouTube channel, where he discussed his relationship and personal beliefs about marriage.

Made Kuti, who is married to Inedoye Onyenso, explained that he does not agree with the traditional idea of one partner kneeling to “ask” the other, stressing that both individuals should come into marriage as equals.

According to him, “I did not go down on my knees when proposing to my wife because I told her it was a mutual decision. We are not begging each other to be with each other.”

The couple held a private wedding ceremony in Lagos in November 2023, marking a major personal milestone for the musician who has continued to build his career in Afrobeat while carrying on the legacy of his famous family.

Made Kuti also revealed that his wife was once his junior in school, adding another layer to their long standing connection before they became romantically involved.

The singer has previously spoken out against ethnic criticism directed at their relationship, describing such sentiments as outdated and referring to ethnic bigotry as a form of “slave mentality.”

His comments have since sparked conversations online about modern relationships, marriage traditions and evolving cultural expectations among young Nigerians.
