A chieftain of the Labour Party in Abia State, Hon. Peter Azubuike, has challenged the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, to formally declare his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election or step aside from what he described as political grandstanding.

Speaking in an interview, Azubuike questioned why Kalu has not yet openly declared his ambition despite growing political discussions around the race. He insisted that Abians deserve clarity from any potential contender ahead of the next election cycle.

Azubuike maintained that the political atmosphere in Abia State has ced significantly, adding that voters are now more informed and focused on performance rather than rhetoric. He argued that the current administration under Governor Alex Otti has already secured strong public support based on what he described as visible achievements in governance.

He further stated that a large percentage of residents are satisfied with Otti’s leadership and are eager to see continuity, describing the governor’s administration as one driven by results and institutional development.

According to him, attempts to influence the political direction of Obingwa Local Government Area or other parts of the state through pressure or promises would not succeed, as voters have become more politically aware and resistant to manipulation.

Azubuike also emphasized that Abia politics is no longer business as usual, warning that any opposition to the current leadership must be based on performance and credible alternatives.

He added that Governor Otti’s administration has restored confidence in governance and that residents are determined to protect what they see as meaningful progress.

The remarks reflect growing political positioning in Abia State ahead of the 2027 elections, with early debates emerging around succession, performance, and party influence.
