Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has reaffirmed his commitment to securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), during a visit to the Sokoto correctional facility on Sunday.
Kanu, who is currently serving a life sentence following his conviction on terrorism charges, received the governor’s visit in what marks the first time a sitting governor has seen him since his sentencing on November 20.
In a statement issued by Otti’s media aide, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the governor encouraged Kanu to stay strong and hopeful. He explained that his efforts to secure Kanu’s freedom began over two years ago and have not stopped, even after the recent court ruling.
Otti expressed optimism that a resolution could still be reached through political and administrative means. He also shared that the Sultan of Sokoto has shown interest in helping to reduce tensions in the South-East and supports efforts to find a peaceful solution. According to Otti, the Sultan even joked with Kanu, calling him “his subject” and playfully suggesting he might one day turban him, which brought a smile to Kanu’s face.
Kanu, in his response, thanked the governor for the visit and said he was not surprised, as Otti had always shown concern for his situation. He emphasized that his focus remains on promoting good governance and improving the lives of the people. He also expressed satisfaction with the reports he has received about Otti’s leadership in Abia State.
Governor Otti was joined on the visit by Abia State Attorney-General Ikechukwu Uwanna, some Sokoto State officials, and Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel. Justice James Omotosho, who presided over Kanu’s trial, had earlier ruled that Kanu be denied access to mobile devices except under strict supervision and ordered his transfer from Abuja to Sokoto following the sentencing.
