LAGOS – The Lagos State House of Assembly has strongly refuted claims that it included funds in the 2026 Appropriation Law to purchase houses in Abuja for its members, describing the reports as “misleading and mischievous.”
In a statement jointly signed by Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy, and Security, and Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh, Chairman of the House Committee on Economic Planning and Budget, the Assembly called the allegation a deliberate fabrication and part of political mischief.
“There is no provision whatsoever in the 2026 Budget for the purchase of houses in Abuja or anywhere else for members of the Lagos State House of Assembly. The report is a complete fabrication,” the statement said, emphasizing that the Assembly’s legislative duties and constitutional responsibilities are strictly within Lagos State.
The lawmakers highlighted that the 2026 capital expenditure of the House of Assembly is less than 0.04% of the total state CAPEX, illustrating the prudence, accountability, and fiscal responsibility guiding the legislature. They also noted that historically, the Assembly often does not fully access its approved budget.
The statement criticized the allegation as part of “election-season propaganda” intended to erode public trust and malign democratic institutions. It urged Lagosians and the general public to rely on official sources for accurate information.
The House further warned that those behind the false claims should produce credible evidence or retract their statements, failing which legal action may be pursued.
