The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere Ekun, will on Wednesday swear in Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The swearing in ceremony is scheduled to take place at 2 pm in Courtroom Two of the Supreme Court complex in Abuja. The event marks another milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s judiciary and reinforce the capacity of the apex court to deliver fair and timely judgments.

Until his elevation, Justice Oyewole served as a Justice of the Court of Appeal and Presiding Justice of the Enugu Division. His appointment to the Supreme Court follows a recommendation by the National Judicial Council at its 110th meeting held on January 13, 2026, under the leadership of the Chief Justice.

In a statement issued by the court’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr Festus Akande, the appointment was described as a significant step toward strengthening the bench with experienced and dedicated jurists. According to the statement, Justice Oyewole served with distinction at the appellate court and demonstrated exceptional commitment to the rule of law.

The statement emphasized that his wealth of legal expertise and integrity would further enhance the Supreme Court’s ability to uphold justice, fairness, and judicial independence. It also noted that the swearing in represents another important move in rejuvenating the judiciary in line with the highest standards of competence and impartiality.

Guests expected at the ceremony have been urged to comply strictly with court protocols and security measures. The Supreme Court reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to delivering justice for the benefit of all Nigerians.
