The Kogi State leadership of the Nafiu Bala Gombe faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has told former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar that his recent ward registration does not meet party rules and must be completed with recognised local officers.
ADC’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Christopher O. Okechukwu, said the Jada 1 Ward registration was handled by people who are not authorised by the party’s national headquarters. “This registration was conducted through individuals who are not recognised by the ADC’s National Headquarters and therefore lack the authority to register new members. We have consistently urged Mr. Abubakar to complete his registration with the duly constituted and authentic party executives in his locality, a step he has yet to take.”
The statement asked Mr. Abubakar and his team to follow the party’s process and register with the official ward leaders so he can be given full membership rights. The ADC warned that the party is not a vehicle for private aims and said the move appears at odds with its constitution and procedures. “The ADC national leadership finds this action to be inconsistent with the party’s constitution and procedures. We are concerned that it may be part of a broader strategy to leverage the ADC while awaiting reconciliation with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a pattern we have observed in the past.
“We once again call on Mr. Abubakar to regularize his membership by registering with the officially recognised party leadership in his local government. Upon doing so, he will be afforded all rights and privileges as stipulated by the ADC constitution,” the statement added.
The faction urged patience and cooperation, and it said any claim of membership must follow the party’s formal steps before it will be recognised.
