Kartoon Studios is making a decisive move into franchise monetization with the appointment of Brooke Bacon as Senior Vice President of Consumer Products and Licensing, bringing a heavyweight gaming industry executive to steer the entertainment company’s ambitious expansion beyond content creation. Bacon, who most recently led global licensing for blockbuster franchises at Activision Blizzard including Call of Duty and World of Warcraft, will oversee the commercialization of Kartoon Studios’ portfolio of owned intellectual property, including rights based on A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh, the Hundred Acre Wood, the Stan Lee Universe, and other elished brands.
The Beverly Hills based company, which trades on the NYSE American under the ticker TOON, announced the appointment as part of a broader strategic realignment toward an owned IP model where the company retains ownership economics across multiple value chain touchpoints. Rather than simply producing content for others, Kartoon Studios is positioning itself to capture revenue from licensing, consumer products, retail partnerships, and brand extensions alongside traditional distribution and advertising channels. For a company focused on children’s and family entertainment, this represents a fundamental shift in how value is created and captured from intellectual property.
Andy Heyward, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Kartoon Studios, emphasized the timing of the appointment as critical to the company’s evolution. According to Heyward, Kartoon Studios has moved beyond the development phase and is now focused on launching and monetizing properties across a broader commercial ecosystem. The strategy centers on creating enduring franchises where the company owns and controls underlying character rights, then participates in value generation across content, distribution, licensing and consumer products. Consumer products and licensing sit at the heart of this approach, offering pathways to monetize IP beyond traditional screen based distribution.
Bacon brings considerable expertise in translating aunce engagement into commercial success. At Activision Blizzard, part of Microsoft’s gaming division, she served as Senior Director of Licensing and Consumer Products, managing global licensing operations for some of the world’s most recognizable gaming properties including Overwatch, Diablo, Spyro and Crash Bandicoot. Her responsibilities spanned long range business strategy, creative development, brand stewardship, commercial expansion and cross functional leadership. Before that role, she held the position of Director of Global Commercial Development at the gaming giant, building the foundation for licensing programs that extended beloved digital characters into physical products and retail experiences.
In her new role at Kartoon Studios, Bacon will elish global licensing and consumer products roadmaps, identify and manage category and retail partnerships, and oversee brand stewardship including style guides and creative assets. She will coordinate go to market plans with creative, production, distribution and marketing teams while helping define commercial milestones and performance measures for scaling investment across individual properties. Her appointment signals that Kartoon Studios is moving from an operational focus on content production to a more sophisticated approach that treats intellectual property as a multi dimensional asset with revenue potential across numerous categories and geographies.
Bacon expressed confidence in the foundation Kartoon Studios has built, noting that the company owns a collection of highly recognizable intellectual property with large, engaged fan followings. That existing aunce base should provide fertile ground for accelerating monetization through strategic licensing, distribution, consumer products and franchise expansion. As the entertainment industry continues to evolve beyond traditional content windows, companies that own their IP and can execute sophisticated licensing strategies stand to capture disproportionate value. Whether Kartoon Studios can successfully translate its creative assets into sustained commercial success will depend largely on execution in the consumer products arena, making Bacon’s appointment a critical test of the company’s broader strategic pivot toward franchise ownership and multi platform monetization.
