Medical schools across Nigeria face disruption next week as lecturers prepare to down tools. The Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics has announced a three-day warning strike starting Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
What’s driving this action? According to Prof. Aniekan Peter, the association’s acting National Secretary General, the Federal Government has consistently ignored their legitimate concerns despite a severe shortage of medical lecturers. The announcement came after an emergency council meeting held in Uyo.
The association didn’t mince words. They criticized government plans to mass produce doctors while neglecting those who train them, especially as the ‘Japa syndrome’ continues depleting academic staff. Unpaid allowances remain at the heart of the dispute, including MCATA, EAA, and excess workload compensation. The CONMESS salary structure payments haven’t been properly documented either.
Peter’s statement warned that the strike will be comprehensive across all medical schools. Still, the association extended an olive branch, urging authorities to return to negotiations before the situation becomes unavoidable. Whether the government will respond in time remains uncertain.
