John Terry criticises Chelsea owners for overlooking him as interim manager

John Terry has publicly criticised Chelsea’s ownership for repeatedly overlooking him when searching for interim managers, describing the decision as borderline offensive given his unparalleled connection to the club and coaching credentials. Speaking candidly on World Cup Uncensored with broadcaster Piers Morgan, the Chelsea legend expressed frustration that the club turned twice to under 21 boss Calum McFarlane rather than appointing him to steady the ship during turbulent periods this season.

Chelsea dismissed Enzo Maresca in January and then Liam Rosenior in April, creating two separate opportunities for a caretaker appointment. On both occasions, the club hierarchy chose McFarlane, who oversaw a creditable draw against title contenders Manchester City during his first brief stint and later managed four league games plus an FA Cup final, which ended in a narrow defeat to City. Terry, who has been involved with Chelsea’s academy since 2023 and holds extensive coaching experience from roles at Aston Villa and Leicester City, believes he was the obvious candidate.

The 45 year old former England captain made over 700 appearances for Chelsea during a glittering 19 year career at Stamford Bridge, capturing five Premier League titles, the Champions League and eight domestic trophies. His legacy at the club remains unmatched by almost any player in its history. Yet when opportunities arose for temporary leadership, he was passed over in favour of less experienced options, a decision that clearly stung the club icon.

Terry was careful to distinguish between interim and permanent roles, insisting he never believed himself ready for the Chelsea job on a long term basis. He acknowledged that Chelsea remains bigger than any individual and that earning the permanent position would require proving himself elsewhere first. However, he argued forcefully that for short term caretaker duties, perhaps just one or two matches, no candidate could match his qualifications, experience and emotional investment in the club’s success.

Beyond his personal frustration, Terry raised broader concerns about opportunities for English managers at elite level. He pointed to the lack of top jobs with substantial budgets going to English coaches, noting that even Frank Lampard’s tenure at Chelsea came during a transfer ban when resources were constrained. Terry also referenced Ed Howe’s situation at Newcastle, suggesting that despite impressive work with the Magpies, Howe was overlooked for the England national team job when Thomas Tuchel was appointed.

Chelsea have since moved decisively, appointing Xabi Alonso on a four year contract following Rosenior’s departure. The Spanish midfield legend, previously sacked after a brief spell at Real Madrid earlier this year, officially assumes control from the start of July. Whether Terry’s public comments will affect his ongoing academy role or future prospects at Stamford Bridge remains to be seen, but his willingness to speak out highlights growing tensions between club legends and a new ownership structure still finding its footing in English football’s most demanding environment.
