The Independent National Electoral Commission has acknowledged growing public concerns over the timing of the 2027 general elections, which are scheduled to coincide with the holy month of Ramadan, and says it may seek legislative intervention if adjustments become necessary.

In a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the commission explained that the election timetable was developed in strict compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act, and INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections 2022.

According to the guidelines, presidential and National Assembly elections are to be held on the third Saturday of February in a general election year, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are conducted two weeks later. Based on this framework, INEC fixed February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly polls, and March 6, 2027, for the governorship and state assembly elections.

However, the commission noted that it has received representations from stakeholders who expressed concerns about the overlap with Ramadan, a significant period of fasting and prayer for Muslims.

INEC stated that it remains sensitive to legitimate concerns that may affect voter participation and the smooth conduct of elections. It disclosed that consultations are ongoing and that it may seek appropriate legislative intervention if required, provided any adjustments remain consistent with constitutional and statutory provisions.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and inclusivity, the commission assured Nigerians that it would keep the public informed of any ces. INEC had earlier scheduled party primaries between May 22 and June 20, 2026, as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
