Hillary Clinton Criticizes Biden’s Reelection Bid After Supporting Him Twice

Hillary Clinton has sharply criticized former President Joe Biden’s decision to seek reelection in 2024, calling it a catastrophic error in judgment that damaged both his legacy and the country’s future. Speaking at an event in Manhattan on Monday, Clinton told a New York Times editor that Biden had made a profound miscalculation by pursuing a second term instead of stepping aside for a competitive Democratic primary.

The remarks represent a striking reversal for Clinton, who actively championed Biden’s candidacy throughout 2024. In June of that year, she publicly declared her support for the president on social media, framing the election as a clear choice between someone who cared about Americans’ rights and prospects versus a candidate focused solely on personal interests. After Biden withdrew from the race later that summer amid concerns about his debate performance, Clinton immediately pivoted to endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, urging voters to unite behind her to defeat Donald Trump.

Clinton’s Monday comments went further than mere disappointment, suggesting that a different Democratic nominee emerging from an open primary process would have successfully defeated Trump. She speculated that Harris herself, or perhaps a Democratic governor or senator, could have prevailed if given the opportunity to compete for the nomination without Biden’s presence dominating the field. According to Clinton, Biden created an impossible situation for his party by insisting he had never promised to serve only one term, despite widespread expectations to the contrary following his 2020 victory.

Biden’s exit from the 2024 race came only after intense pressure from within Democratic ranks following what many observers described as a disastrous debate performance against Trump. Throughout his presidency, questions about his cognitive sharpness had circulated in some media outlets and among political commentators, though mainstream news organizations and prominent Democrats largely defended him from such criticisms. Clinton herself was among those who publicly supported Biden during this period, making her current assessment all the more notable.

Both Joe and Jill Biden have recently ramped up efforts to defend their political legacy as criticism mounts from fellow Democrats who hold them partially responsible for Trump’s return to power in 2025. Many within the party have engaged in public soul searching about whether an earlier decision by Biden to step aside might have ced the electoral outcome. Clinton’s willingness to openly criticize that decision signals growing fractures within Democratic leadership over how the 2024 race was handled.

Looking ahead, Clinton’s remarks may embolden other Democrats to speak more candidly about internal party decisions during the 2024 cycle. As the party begins planning for future elections, questions about candidate selection, primary processes, and how to handle aging leadership will likely dominate strategic conversations. Whether Democrats can transform these difficult assessments into concrete reforms remains an open question as they navigate their path forward in opposition to the Trump administration.
