Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has reiterated that safety and security remain central to his administration’s agenda. He made the remarks on Sunday at the Mater Dei Catholic Cathedral, Umuahia, during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Interdenominational Thanksgiving Service, organised jointly by the state government and the Nigerian Legion, Abia State chapter, to honour fallen heroes.
Governor Otti assured residents that his administration would remain committed to a people-centred agenda, saying, “Nothing can distract us. I want to assure you that this is a government of the people, not a government of a few.” He emphasized that monthly security council meetings with service commanders and traditional rulers help review developments and map out strategies to maintain peace across the state.
Highlighting ongoing progress, Otti said 2026 would be a remarkable year for Abia, with significant developments already underway, especially through the implementation of the state’s ambitious 2026 budget.
The governor also extended condolences to families of fallen Armed Forces members and commended the sacrifices of both living and deceased personnel. He thanked service commanders for their dedication and Abia residents for their support in safeguarding communities, noting, “The Armed Forces are working with other security agencies, the government, and our people—who are the chief security officers of their communities—to ensure peace in the state. These collective efforts have produced the results we are seeing.”
During the service, the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Michael Ukpong, urged members of the Armed Forces to emulate Cornelius, the biblical army officer known for his fear of God, humility, and commitment to prayer. He reminded solrs that they are servants of the people and should not intimidate those they are meant to protect, praying for divine protection over serving personnel and eternal rest for departed solrs.
