France Summons US Ambassador Over Comments on Death of Far Right Activist

The French government has summoned the United States ambassador to Paris following remarks by American officials regarding the death of a far right activist in the city of Lyon.

French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot announced that the ambassador, Charles Kushner, would be called in over comments that Paris described as interference in domestic affairs.

The controversy centers on the death of 23 year old Quentin Deranque, who d two days after sustaining severe head injuries during a violent brawl in Lyon on February 12. The incident, captured on video, showed several masked individuals kicking and punching a man lying on the ground, sparking outrage across France.

In a statement shared by the US embassy in France, the United States Department of State Counterterrorism Bureau suggested that reports Deranque was ed by left wing militants should concern the international community. The post described violent radical leftism as a growing threat to public safety.

Barrot, speaking to France Inter, rejected the comments and said France would not tolerate foreign interference in matters concerning its national community. He emphasized that the judicial process is ongoing and should be allowed to proceed independently.

French authorities have charged two individuals with in connection with the case, while a total of 11 people have been arrested as investigations continue.

The incident has also created diplomatic tension between France and Italy after Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni linked the death to groups associated with left wing extremism.

This marks the second time Kushner has been summoned by French officials in recent months, reflecting growing sensitivity over foreign commentary on domestic security issues.
