FG Urges Stronger Media Collaboration to Combat Misinformation

The Federal Government has called for deeper collaboration among the media government institutions and key stakeholders to address the growing challenge of misinformation and disinformation across the country. It warned that the unchecked spread of false information poses a serious threat to public trust national unity and democratic ility.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris made this appeal on Monday in Abuja during the 2026 World Press Freedom Day celebration held at Radio House. He stressed that a coordinated national response is necessary to protect the integrity of the information space and ensure that citizens have access to accurate and reliable news.

Idris noted that responsible journalism remains a cornerstone of democracy and must be supported through partnerships between the government media organisations and international bos. He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to press freedom describing it as a constitutional right that must be upheld at all times.

He also condemned all forms of harassment and s on journalists warning that such actions undermine accountability and weaken democratic institutions. According to him the government will continue to promote a safe environment where journalists can operate freely without fear.

The minister highlighted ongoing efforts including the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act and investments in public communication systems to improve transparency. He also pointed to Nigeria’s collaboration with UNESCO in elishing the International Media and Information Literacy Institute in Abuja as a key step toward empowering citizens to critically evaluate information.

The government reiterated its commitment to strengthening the information ecosystem through sustained engagement with stakeholders to support national development and democratic governance.
