The Federal Government has entered into a strategic partnership with European aircraft manufacturing giant Airbus aimed at boosting Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, maintenance capacity, and human capital development.
The agreement was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding signed during a working visit to Airbus global headquarters in Toulouse, France by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo.
Keyamo described the partnership as a significant milestone for Nigeria aviation sector, noting that it aligns with government efforts to build a sustainable and globally competitive aeronautical ecosystem.
He explained that the collaboration goes beyond infrastructure development to include training, technical support, and knowledge transfer for aviation professionals in Nigeria.
Under the agreement, Airbus will support Nigeria in key areas such as Maintenance Repair and Overhaul facilities, pilot and engineer training, and advisory services to strengthen operational efficiency within the sector.
The minister was accompanied by senior aviation officials, including heads of regulatory agencies and airspace management bos, highlighting the importance of the partnership to national aviation development.
Airbus President for Africa and the Middle East Gabriel Semelas said Nigeria holds a strategic position in Africa aviation future due to its population size and expanding economy.
He noted that the agreement reflects a shared commitment to developing civil aviation capacity, improving local expertise, and supporting long term industry growth across the country.
Semelas added that Airbus is focused on leveraging local talent while helping to build sustainable aviation systems that can support Africa growing air transport demand.
The partnership also includes exploration of Sustainable Aviation Fuel development, which aligns Nigeria with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation industry.
Airbus currently maintains a significant presence across Africa and continues to invest in workforce development as part of its long term strategy for the region.
According to industry projections, Africa will require nearly 1,500 new aircraft by 2044, alongside thousands of pilots, engineers, and cabin crew to meet rising demand.
The Federal Government says the partnership marks a major step toward positioning Nigeria as a key aviation hub in Africa while strengthening ss development and industry capacity.
