Eloy Room Makes 15 Saves to Lead Curacao to Historic World Cup Point Against Ecuador

Eloy Room needed just two minutes to announce himself on football’s grandest stage. When Ecuador’s Enner Valencia bore down on goal from close range in the opening moments of Saturday’s Group E clash in Kansas City, the Curacao goalkeeper produced a stunning save that would set the tone for one of the most remarkable individual performances in World Cup history. By the final whistle, Room had made 15 saves in a 0-0 draw, the most ever recorded in a 90 minute World Cup match, and delivered his nation of 156,000 people their first point at the tournament.

Only Tim Howard’s 16 saves for the United States against Belgium in 2014, a match that went to extra time, stands above Room’s achievement in the record books. Throughout the match at Children’s Mercy Park, the 37 year old goalkeeper stood defiant against wave after wave of Ecuadorean s. He pushed away an 18 metre strike from John Yeboah in the 41st minute, denied Valencia again with a second half header save, and repeatedly frustrated the South American side’s forwards. Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez offered perhaps the simplest assessment when he told reporters that Room had played the game of his life.

For Room, the oldest player in Curacao’s squad, Saturday’s heroics represented the culmination of a journey that began with childhood dreams and family ties. Born near the German border in the Netherlands, Room became eligible to represent Curacao through his father and visited the island nation regularly during his youth. Speaking to FIFA earlier this year, he revealed that playing for Curacao in a World Cup had been a dream since childhood. That dream became reality in 2015 when former Netherlands international Patrick Kluivert, then managing Curacao, reached out to bring him into the fold.

Saturday’s performance catapulted Room to unexpected global stardom. His Instagram following exploded from fewer than 100,000 to approximately 700,000 in the hours after the final whistle, mirroring the social media surge experienced by Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha after his heroic display against Spain in Group H. Both tournament debutants have found unlikely heroes between the posts, with their goalkeepers delivering performances that have captured worldwide attention. Room himself was modest about his record breaking save count, telling reporters he hadn’t been thinking about statistics during the match, though he joked about his annoyance at falling one save short of Howard’s mark.

Curacao’s achievement carries profound significance for what is officially the smallest nation ever to compete at a World Cup. As an autonomous constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the team drew royal attention to their historic occasion. King Willem Alexander and Queen Maxima attended the match and celebrated with the players afterward, with Room revealing that the queen even kissed him in the jubilant scenes that followed. Head coach Advocaat had suggested before the match that his side might need Ecuador reduced by four players to have a chance of winning. Instead, one man proved sufficient to secure a result that prompted a journalist from the Caribbean nation to leap from his seat in the press box, shouting about history being made.

Room’s club career has taken him from Dutch side Vitesse, where he spent most of his playing years, to Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer, then PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie, and currently to Miami FC in the USL Championship. Yet none of those stops prepared the footballing world for what the six foot three inch goalkeeper would produce on Saturday. Curacao still face an uphill battle to advance from Group E, but Room has already ensured that their World Cup debut will be remembered not for participation alone but for a performance of genuine historical importance. Whether lightning can strike twice remains to be seen, but for at least one afternoon in Kansas City, Eloy Room stood tall enough to write his name into World Cup folklore.
