Xabi Alonso Eyes Marcus Rashford as Chelsea Target After Barcelona Deal Collapses

Marcus Rashford’s future at Manchester United s in the balance as incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso emerges as a potential suitor for the England international, with a £40 million release clause in the winger’s contract reportedly available to all Premier League clubs except Manchester City and Liverpool. The 28 year old forward, currently representing England at the World Cup, finds himself in limbo after Barcelona surprisingly pulled out of making his loan move permanent despite a productive season at the Nou Camp.

Rashford delivered a respectable return of 14 goals across all competitions during his season long stint with the Catalan giants under Hansi Flick. Barcelona held an option to secure his services permanently for just £26 million, a fee that appeared modest given his contributions. However, following their acquisition of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, the Spanish club opted against triggering the permanent transfer, leaving Rashford set to return to Old Trafford with his long term future deeply uncertain. His performances in Spain had reignited hopes of a fresh start away from United, where his form had previously stagnated.

Former Arsenal and Chelsea defender William Gallas has publicly backed the potential union between Rashford and Alonso’s Chelsea project. Speaking about the England winger’s prospects, Gallas expressed surprise at Barcelona’s decision while highlighting why Stamford Bridge could be the ideal destination. He praised Rashford’s performances in Spain and suggested the player’s style would complement what Alonso aims to build at Chelsea. Rashford’s quality was on display during England’s World Cup opener against Croatia, where he contributed with a well taken finish in a 4 to 2 victory, reminding observers of his capabilities when deployed in the right system.

Not everyone believes United should part ways with their academy graduate. Rio Ferdinand, the former United defender, has urged his old club to reconsider any sale after witnessing Rashford’s recent performances. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand suggested the time away from Manchester may have provided the reset both player and club needed. He noted a newfound maturity in Rashford’s game and demeanor, questioning whether now might be the moment for reconciliation rather than separation. Ferdinand’s willingness to reassess his previous stance reflects the complexity of the situation and the genuine affection many still hold for a player who came through United’s youth ranks.

Gallas also addressed Chelsea’s striking options, expressing reservations about whether Nicolas Jackson possesses the consistent quality required to lead the line for a club with title ambitions. While acknowledging Jackson’s movement and occasional flashes of quality, the Frenchman questioned the forward’s ability to deliver across an entire campaign. Gallas pointed to a crucial miss against France in a recent match as evidence of Jackson’s limitations in decisive moments. Instead, he advocated for Chelsea to pursue Victor Osimhen, expressing bewilderment that the Nigerian striker has not yet made a move to the Premier League despite his proven pedigree at the highest level of European football.

As the World Cup continues, Rashford’s club future remains one of the summer’s most intriguing subplots. Whether Alonso can convince him that Chelsea represents the fresh start he sought at Barcelona, or whether Ferdinand’s plea for United to reverse course gains traction, will likely be resolved in the weeks following the tournament. What seems certain is that a player once considered untouchable at Old Trafford now faces a career crossroads, with his next destination potentially defining the final years of his prime. For Chelsea, adding a proven Premier League performer with renewed confidence and international pedigree could provide exactly the creative spark Alonso needs as he begins his Stamford Bridge tenure.
