Edwin Madunagu at 80 Celebrating a Lifetime of Revolutionary Struggle

May 15 2026 marked the 80th birthday of Comrade Edwin Ikechukwu Madunagu one of Nigeria’s most respected revolutionary intellectuals activists and Marxist thinkers whose influence has shaped generations of progressive political movements across the country.

Born in 1946 during British colonial rule Madunagu grew into a leading voice for social justice workers rights democratic freedoms and socialist ideals in Nigeria. Over the past five decades he has remained committed to the struggles of ordinary Nigerians despite political repression military rule and cing governments.

A trained mathematician and former academic Madunagu stud at the University of Ibadan where he encountered Marxist ideas that later defined his political philosophy. He became widely known for his fearless writings lectures and political activism challenging corruption authoritarianism inequality and capitalist exploitation.

Throughout his career Madunagu played a central role in Nigeria’s radical Left movement influencing students labour unions civil society organisations and progressive intellectual circles. His writings encouraged critical thinking political awareness and resistance against oppression.

Alongside his late wife and fellow activist Benedicta Madunagu he built one of Nigeria’s most admired revolutionary partnerships. Their home in Calabar became a meeting point for activists scholars and organisers committed to democratic and social struggles.

One of Madunagu’s lasting contributions is the Socialist Library and Archives SOLAR a project created to preserve Nigeria’s radical political history and intellectual traditions. The archive contains important materials on labour struggles feminism anti colonial resistance and socialist movements.

Even in old age Madunagu has continued mentoring younger activists while promoting programmes aimed at addressing gender violence social responsibility and political consciousness among youths.

His life journey has also been marked by sacrifice including detention harassment and dismissal from public service because of his activism during military rule. Despite personal losses including the death of his wife Benedicta in 2024 and longtime comrade Biodun Jeyifo in 2026 Madunagu remains committed to the struggle for justice equality and human dignity.

As comrades students intellectuals and activists celebrate his 80th birthday many describe Edwin Madunagu as a symbol of endurance courage and unwavering commitment to revolutionary ideals in Nigeria.
