Former Real Madrid assistant coach Davide Ancelotti has stressed that modern football managers must move beyond rigid tactical identities and instead combine multiple styles to succeed at the highest level.

Speaking in an interview reported by BBC Sport, the 36 year old coach said contemporary football demands adaptability rather than strict adherence to a single philosophy, as teams now face constantly evolving tactical challenges.

Ancelotti explained that his own coaching approach has been shaped by a wide range of influences rather than one dominant figure. He highlighted the impact of managers such as Pep Guardiola for positional play innovation, Jürgen Klopp for high intensity pressing systems, and Roberto De Zerbi for detailed build up structures and creative use of space.

He also praised the defensive organisation of go Simeone and the tactical flexibility of Unai Emery, while acknowledging the long standing influence of his father, Carlo Ancelotti, who was shaped by the legendary Arrigo Sacchi school of zonal defending.

Despite these influences, Davide Ancelotti insisted that he is building his own coaching identity. He noted that while comparisons to his father are common, his approach is distinct and evolving, particularly in how he blends structure with freedom depending on players and opponents.

He emphasized that modern teams must be capable of executing different tactical phases at a high level, including possession control, pressing intensity, and defensive organisation. Using elite European sides as examples, he pointed out that top teams today must be comfortable switching between positional play and direct transitions seamlessly.

According to him, the defining factor of any team is not a fixed philosophy but what a coach prioritizes on the training ground. He believes that consistent emphasis on specific principles ultimately shapes a team’s identity over time.

Ancelotti concluded that the future of football management lies in balance, where coaches combine tactical clarity with flexibility to adapt to the demands of modern competition.
