Court Stops Pdp Convention over Exclusion of Sule Lamido from Chairmanship Race

The Federal High Court in Abuja has delivered a decisive ruling that blocks the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its planned 2025 National Convention in Ibadan, originally scheduled for November 15–16.

Justice Peter Odo Lifu issued the order on Friday in response to a legal challenge brought by former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido. The court found that the PDP had violated its own internal procedures by preventing Lamido from purchasing a nomination form to contest for the position of National Chairman.

As a result, the judge ruled that the convention cannot proceed until Lamido is granted equal access to participate in the process. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was also barred from playing any role in the event whether through oversight, monitoring, or support until the party rectifies the situation.

Justice Lifu emphasized that political parties must uphold their constitutions and ensure fair treatment of all eligible members. He criticized the PDP’s decision to exclude Lamido, stating that such actions undermine democratic principles and deny aspirants their legitimate rights.

The ruling sends a strong message about internal party accountability and could reshape the PDP’s leadership dynamics ahead of the 2025 elections.
