Going an entire football season without losing a single league match is usually enough to secure the title for most clubs. However, football history has produced a few extraordinary exceptions where teams completed unbeaten campaigns but still failed to become champions.
One of the most famous examples is Benfica during the 1977 1978 Portuguese league season. Benfica finished the entire campaign without defeat but lost the title to FC Porto on goal difference after one of the closest title races in Portuguese football history.
Remarkably, Benfica repeated the unusual feat during the 2025 2026 season under manager José Mourinho. The club ended the campaign unbeaten after recording 23 wins and 11 draws, finishing with 80 points following a 3 1 victory over G.D. Estoril Praia.
Despite not losing a single league game, Benfica finished third behind Porto and Sporting CP. The large number of draws proved costly, and the club missed out on both the league title and qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
Another historic example came from Perugia during the 1978 1979 Serie A season. The Italian side completed the entire league campaign unbeaten but finished second behind AC Milan due to too many drawn matches.
Perugia’s season remains one of the clearest examples of how consistency alone is not always enough to win a championship. Their inability to convert draws into victories ultimately cost them the Serie A title despite avoiding defeat throughout the season.
These rare cases remain among football’s most fascinating records and highlight how fine the margins can be in league football.
