Bruno Fernandes has been named the Football Writers Association Men’s Footballer of the Year following his impressive performances during the 2025 2026 season for Manchester United.

The Portuguese midfielder has enjoyed one of the best campaigns of his career, scoring eight goals and providing 20 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions. Fernandes has been central to Manchester United’s improved performances under interim manager Michael Carrick.

Although Manchester United are still on track to finish the season without a major trophy, the club remain in a strong position to secure a third place finish in the Premier League and qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Fernandes becomes the first Manchester United player to win the prestigious Football Writers Association award since Wayne Rooney claimed the honour in 2010.

The midfielder joined Manchester United from Sporting CP in January 2020 in a transfer worth £67.7 million. Since arriving at Old Trafford, Fernandes has elished himself as one of the club’s most influential players and recently celebrated his 300th appearance for the Red Devils.

His latest achievement comes after speculation surrounding his future at the club last season. Reports suggested Manchester United were willing to consider offers for Fernandes, including strong interest from Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal.

However, the 31 year old rejected the opportunity to leave and also turned down approaches from other European clubs, choosing instead to remain committed to Manchester United.

Fernandes is currently contracted with the club until 2027, with an option for an additional year. Following his outstanding season, discussions over a possible contract extension are expected in the coming months.
