Volcano Engine, the cloud arm of ByteDance, has released a new coding assistant called “Doubao-Seed-Code” and is offering the first month for 9.9 yuan. The regular monthly fee is 40 yuan, and the launch promotion began on November 11, Singles’ Day.

The company says the model scored very well on the SWE-Bench Verified test, putting it alongside other leading systems such as Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet. Volcano Engine also claims the agent is much cheaper than the market average, priced about 62.7% lower than typical offerings.

“Doubao-Seed-Code” can handle very large queries of up to 256,000 words which helps it work with complex codebases and speed up full-stack development. The product supports tools like veCLI, Cursor, and Cline, and can work with APIs similar to Anthropic’s.

Volcano Engine reported rising use of its Doubao chatbot, saying traffic has doubled in six months. The firm says this shows fast growth in AI use among local users and strengthens ByteDance’s role in the AI field.

The launch follows growing tension in the global AI market. In September, Anthropic limited access for some Chinese-linked companies. Six days before this agent rolled out, ByteDance stopped using Anthropic’s Claude models for its teams.

The new coding agent has been added to the Singapore-based coding app “Trae,” and the company says the model was built on a training system focused on many agent runs. Volcano Engine also noted its move is part of a push to gain more ground in China’s busy AI tools market.
