Bryce Dessner, renowned as a guitarist for the in-rock band The National, is set to debut his latest classical composition, the Piano Concerto, in September 2025. This piece holds personal significance for Dessner, as it is dedicated to his sister, Jessica, a ballet dancer who has faced health challenges. The concerto will be performed by pianist Alice Sara Ott during Dessner’s year-long residency at the Konzerthaus Berlin.

Dessner’s musical journey is marked by a seamless blend of genres, reflecting his diverse upbringing in Cincinnati, Ohio. Exposed to jazz, classical, and rock from an early age, he has consistently defied traditional musical boundaries. His compositions often fuse orchestral instruments with rock rhythms, creating a unique sound that resonates across different musical landscapes.

In his upcoming Piano Concerto, Dessner channels his sister’s influence, infusing the piece with dance rhythms and a lyrical quality that mirrors her ballet performances. He describes the work as a “love letter” to Jessica, aiming to capture the emotional depth of her artistic expression. The concerto also incorporates persistent rock rhythms, adding a layer of exuberance and energy to the composition.

Dessner’s approach to music is characterized by a rejection of conventional labels. He believes that the term “crossover” can be reductive, as it often fails to capture the essence of his work.

Instead, he emphasizes the importance of artistic curiosity and the willingness to explore new forms of expression. This philosophy aligns with his admiration for artists like The Beatles, Stravinsky, and Beethoven, who were known for their openness and innovation.

Throughout his career, Dessner has collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including minimalist composer Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Jonny Greenwood, Paul Simon, and Taylor Swift. These collaborations have significantly influenced his musical style, blending elements of minimalism, folk, and rock. His work on Taylor Swift’s album “Folklore” is a testament to his versatility and ability to adapt his compositional ss to various genres.

As Dessner prepares for his residency at the Konzerthaus Berlin, he remains committed to his artistic exploration. He views himself as both a collaborator and a student, constantly seeking new ways of expression and embracing the feedback of fellow musicians. This openness to learning and growth continues to drive his innovative contributions to the music world.
