Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has held a strategic meeting with leaders of the African Democratic Congress from the South East alongside prominent Igbo political figures, signalling possible collaboration ahead of the party’s 2027 presidential primary.

According to a statement released by the ADC on Wednesday, the meeting was described as crucial in shaping the party’s strategic direction and potential alliances as it prepares for the 2027 elections. The closed door session took place on Tuesday night at the Abuja residence of Chikwe Udensi and brought together a high profile list of party stakeholders and regional leaders.

Among those in attendance were Senator Augustine Akobundu, Chief Chekwas Okorie, former Minister of State for Education Emeka Nwajiuba, Dr Osita Oruche, Prof Onyi Nwagbara, Chief Uchenna Okogbuo, former ADC National Chairman Chief Ralph Nwosu, Hon Uzoma Abonta, Hon Uko Nkole, Etigwe Uwah, Dr Steve Nwadiuko, Chief Morris Eboh, Senator Frank Ibezim, and Dr Dave Eboh.

The meeting comes amid heightened political activities following the release of a revised electoral timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The commission has fixed Presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State Assembly elections will hold on February 6.

INEC disclosed that party primaries, including the resolution of disputes, will run from April 23, 2026 to May 30, 2026, giving political parties a 91 day window to complete their candidate selection processes.

The commission also emphasised that under the Electoral Act 2026, parties must submit digital membership registers at least 21 days before any primary, congress, or convention. Failure to comply could lead to disqualification from fielding candidates.

Observers say the ADC meeting with Atiku may signal early coalition talks as parties reposition for the 2027 presidential contest.
