The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU has issued a strong warning to the Federal Government of Nigeria over the delay in implementing the 2025 agreement signed with the union. ASUU said the continued failure to fulfill the agreement could threaten ility in Nigerian universities and trigger fresh agitation among academic staff.
Speaking during a press briefing at the ASUU UNILAG Secretariat on Wednesday, the Lagos Zone Coordinator, Adesola Nassir, expressed disappointment over the government’s inability to provide the required financial support and elish the Implementation Monitoring Committee IMC as agreed.
According to Nassir, the agreement was designed to address major concerns affecting university lecturers and institutions across the country. These include salary deficits, infrastructure development, employment challenges, and welfare packages for academic staff.
He explained that the agreement also covered the integration of allowances such as Consolidated Academic Tool Allowances CATA, Earned Academic Allowances EAA, and Professorial Allowances PA into the Consolidated Academic Staff Salary Scale CONUASS beginning from January 2026.
Nassir accused the government of using the agreement for political purposes rather than genuinely addressing the issues that have repeatedly disrupted academic activities in Nigerian universities.
Reacting to recent comments by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, who stated that strikes would no longer affect academic activities, Nassir said the government must first show commitment by addressing financial shortfalls and implementing agreed policies.
He also criticised the temporary arrangement directing universities to manage salary payments independently, describing it as inconsistent and damaging to the spirit of the agreement.
The union further lamented unresolved welfare matters, including unpaid salary arrears and withheld salaries from previous industrial actions. Nassir warned that ASUU would continue its struggle until the government takes meaningful action to resolve the lingering issues affecting university lecturers and the education sector.
