Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities at the University of Lagos chapter have threatened to embark on an indefinite strike following what they described as amputated salaries paid to lecturers in January and February 2026. The decision was announced after an emergency congress held by the union, where members deliberated extensively on the development and expressed strong dissatisfaction with the university management.
In a communique jointly signed by the chairperson, Idou Kehinde, and the secretary, Adesina Arikawe, the union said the strike action would commence on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. According to the union leaders, the action became necessary after repeated complaints over the salary deductions failed to receive a satisfactory response from the university administration.
The union explained that the January 2026 salary payment excluded certain allowances across the university campuses. At the Akoka Campus, lecturers reportedly did not receive the Earned Academic Allowance payment. Meanwhile, staff at the Idi Araba Campus were said to have been denied both the Earned Academic Allowance and the CATA payment.
ASUU also alleged that the university again paid an amputated salary for February 2026 to its members without any clear explanation or prior agreement with the union. The lecturers described the action as discriminatory and unacceptable, insisting that it undermines staff welfare and violates elished agreements guiding salary payments in federal universities.
The union further criticized the management, stating that the action violates the principles of fairness and decency expected in the administration of a federal institution. Members at the meeting unanimously agreed to reject the salary payments in their current form.
As part of the resolution reached during the meeting, ASUU directed its members to withdraw their services starting from Wednesday until the university management pays the full salaries for January and February 2026. The union emphasized that academic activities would remain suspended until all outstanding payments are settled in full.
