The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the federal government a four-day ultimatum to implement the newly approved salary structure for university lecturers. The directive was issued by ASUU President Christopher Piwuna on Thursday while addressing members at Sa’adu Zungur University, Yuli Campus, in Bauchi State.
Piwuna warned that the countdown begins immediately, stressing that failure to comply would trigger decisive action from the union. “We have issued a four day ultimatum from today to the federal government to commence payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” he said.
He criticised the federal government for its persistent failure to honour past agreements with ASUU, noting that such lapses have repeatedly led to industrial disputes and strikes.
Addressing the proposed elishment of a branch of Coventry University in Nigeria following President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to London, Piwuna stated that the union would oppose the move. He argued that allowing the foreign institution to operate locally would undermine the growth and relevance of Nigerian universities, describing it as a new form of colonialism in the nation’s education sector.
Piwuna further noted that the proposal comes at a time when Coventry University is reportedly experiencing a decline in global admission applications. He urged the federal government to prioritise strengthening Nigerian universities through collaboration with ASUU to meet the needs of present and future generations.
