Arsenal Target Ezri Konsa as Arteta Eyes Villa Defender Valued at £60m

Arsenal have registered tentative interest in Aston Villa centre back Ezri Konsa as Mikel Arteta continues his search for defensive reinforcements this summer. The Premier League champions are casting their net across Villa Park, having already been linked with a blockbuster move for Morgan Rogers, though Villa’s eye watering £130 million valuation for the England international may complicate negotiations.

Konsa has emerged as one of the most consistent defenders in English football since his modest £12 million move from Brentford seven years ago. Now 28, the centre back has become an integral component of Unai Emery’s ambitious project at Villa Park and has earned recognition on the international stage, starting every match for England at this summer’s World Cup. Arsenal’s interest remains in the preliminary stages, with no formal offer yet submitted to Villa, who are understood to be demanding a £60 million fee for a player with just two years remaining on his current contract.

Arteta is personally driving Arsenal’s pursuit of Konsa, viewing the defender as a player whose qualities remain underappreciated despite years of top level performances. Villa’s valuation presents a significant obstacle, however, with sources suggesting Arsenal may consider the asking price excessive given the contractual situation. Nevertheless, Konsa’s versatility across the defensive line and his impressive displays at the World Cup have clearly caught the attention of the Gunners’ coaching staff.

Ollie Watkins, who partners Konsa at both club and international level, has become one of the defender’s most vocal advocates. Speaking this week, the England striker praised his teammate’s consistency and technical abilities, highlighting qualities that often go unnoticed outside Villa’s immediate circle. Watkins pointed to Konsa’s exceptional one on one defending, recalling a performance against Brazil where the Villa defender successfully neutralized Vinicius Junior throughout the contest.

According to Watkins, Konsa represents one of the Premier League’s elite centre backs despite operating outside the traditional spotlight afforded to players at the league’s biggest clubs. The striker emphasized his teammate’s reliability and tactical intelligence, noting that Konsa rarely makes defensive errors and possesses the adaptability to excel at right back when required. Such versatility would undoubtedly appeal to Arteta, whose tactical system often demands positional flexibility from his defensive personnel.

Arsenal’s summer transfer strategy now appears focused on strengthening multiple areas, with Villa emerging as an unexpected source for potential recruits. Whether the two clubs can find common ground on valuations remains to be seen, particularly as Villa seek to retain their best players while competing in European competition. For Konsa, the coming weeks may determine whether he remains part of Emery’s project or finally secures the high profile move that many believe his performances have long merited.
