The Anambra State Government has called on commercial transport operators to resume full operations on Mondays as part of renewed efforts to end the sit at home practice and fully revive economic activities across the state.
The Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, made the appeal during a one day training and retraining programme for commercial drivers and riders held in Awka on Tuesday. He stressed that the transport sector plays a critical role in restoring normalcy and boosting productivity, particularly on Mondays.
According to Mefor, traders and other business owners have largely complied with the government directive to resume work on Mondays. However, many face transportation challenges that hinder smooth operations for both sellers and customers. He noted that civil servants are back at work, banks have reopened, schools are functioning, and markets are operating fully. He specifically mentioned that the Main Market is now fully operational on Mondays, leaving transportation as the only sector yet to fully align.
Mefor urged transporters to support the state initiative, emphasizing that their cooperation would not only strengthen the economy but also improve their own income and livelihood.
Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Transport, Patricia Igwebuike, explained that the training programme was designed to update commercial drivers and riders on safety rules and best practices. The initiative was organized by the Ministry of Transport in partnership with Rotary International District 9142 to equip participants with essential knowledge and ss for safer and more efficient road operations.
